The Cincinnati market

Cincinnati is a real production market, and most local video does not act like it.

This city has a broadcast history that keeps the bar high. WKRC Local 12, WLWT, WCPO, WXIX, and a radio market anchored by WLW mean Cincinnati viewers see well-produced spots all day. When a local business runs something shot on a phone in a parking lot next to a national spot in the same commercial break, the comparison is brutal and immediate. Production quality is not vanity here. It is a credibility tax you pay or you do not.

The second thing that catches businesses out is where video actually runs now. A spot for Local 12 has different requirements than a fifteen second cutdown for Instagram, which has different requirements again from a CTV placement or a YouTube pre-roll. Most Cincinnati companies pay for one video, run it everywhere, and wonder why it underperforms in three of the four places. We plan the cutdowns before the shoot, not after.

And there is the practical matter of where you point a camera. A manufacturer in Fairfield, a law firm downtown, a restaurant in Over-the-Rhine, a home services company running out of Anderson Township. Each of those has a look that sells and a look that undercuts them. We scout, we light it properly, and when the location is not doing you any favors we bring you to the green screen stage instead.

How we do it

How we produce video and TV commercials.

Concept, script, shoot, post, delivery. You see and approve work at every gate.

  • 01

    Strategy and concept

What the video has to accomplish, where it will run, and who has to act after watching it. We concept against that brief rather than starting with a look we think is cool.

  • 02

    Script and storyboard

Written by broadcast writers, boarded so you can see the piece before it exists. You approve both. Changes here cost nothing. Changes on shoot day cost a crew day.

  • 03

    Pre-production and scouting

Location scout, casting, talent, wardrobe, permits if needed, and a shot list. If the green screen stage on Ohio Pike is the better answer, we say so and book it.

  • 04

    The shoot

Our crew, our gear, our studio or your site. Cincinnati clients usually sit in, which we encourage. Decisions get made in the room instead of over three days of email.

  • 05

    Post production

Edit, color, graphics and animation, original music or licensed, voiceover cast and recorded here, final audio mix. Two rounds of revisions are standard and rarely both get used.

  • 06

    Delivery in every format

Broadcast-spec masters for Local 12 and the rest of the market, plus vertical and square cutdowns for social, CTV specs, and web versions. One shoot, every placement covered.

Why a nationwide agency headquartered here

Six Telly Awards, two in-house studios, and a Cincinnati address since 1999.

Killerspots has produced broadcast creative from this city for more than twenty five years, and the awards are the shorthand for it. Six Telly Awards, more than 1,000 brands served, and a client roster that is mostly outside Ohio. The work that goes out to national accounts is made by the same crew that will shoot your spot, in the same rooms.

Owning the studios changes the economics and the schedule. There is no rental clock running, no negotiating a stage on someone else strike day, and no waiting on an audio house across town for a mix. When a client needs a revision Thursday for a Monday flight, we do it Thursday. That is the practical benefit of an agency that kept its production in house while most of the industry sold theirs off.

It also means the rest of the campaign is right there. Original music, jingles, voice talent, radio versions of the same message, media buying. You are not assembling four vendors and refereeing the handoffs.

The studio

The green screen stage is ours, and you can rent it.

The video stage, control room, lighting grid, and audio suites are at the Ohio Pike office. We shoot client work there constantly, and when the room is open we rent it out to Cincinnati producers, agencies, and businesses shooting their own content. Crew is available if you want it, or bring your own and just take the space.

Half day and full day bookings, cyc-lit green screen, teleprompter, and a control room built by people who use it every week rather than rent it out once a month.

Who has worked in these rooms

  • Bootsy Collins, green screen video
  • Kirk Herbstreit, audio sessions
  • National radio and TV campaigns, weekly since 1999
  • Cincinnati businesses shooting their own social content

FAQ

Video Production in Cincinnati, answered.

Do you have a studio in Cincinnati?

Yes. Our green screen video stage and audio suites are at the Ohio Pike office in Cincinnati, and clients sit in on shoots regularly. Bootsy Collins has shot green screen with us and Kirk Herbstreit has recorded in the same building. You can also rent the stage on its own.

What does video production cost in Cincinnati?

It scales with crew size, shoot days, locations, and whether you need original music or licensed. A single-location interview piece and a multi-day branded shoot are different animals. Tell us where the video will run and how long it needs to be, and you get a firm number.

Can you produce a TV commercial that will air on Local 12?

Yes. We deliver broadcast-spec spots for WKRC Local 12 and every other station in the market, in the exact format and slate each one requires. We also handle the media buy if you want the production and the placement in one place.

How long does a video project take?

Four to six weeks is typical from kickoff to final delivery. Concept and script take the first week or two, the shoot is usually one or two days, then edit, color, audio mix, and revisions. Rush timelines are possible because the edit suites are ours, not rented.

Do you write the script?

We do. Our writers have been producing broadcast copy since 1999, which is a different craft from writing a blog post. You get a script and a storyboard to approve before anyone picks up a camera, so there are no surprises on shoot day.

Can you shoot at my location?

Yes, and often we should. A manufacturer in Fairfield or a restaurant in Over-the-Rhine looks better in its own space than on a stage. We scout first, bring lighting and audio, and work around your operation rather than shutting it down for a day.

What about music and voiceover?

Both happen in this building. We have been one of the country busiest jingle and audio houses since 1999, so original scoring, voice talent casting, and the final mix all happen down the hall from the edit bay. Nothing gets outsourced and nothing waits on a vendor.

Next step

Tell us where the video has to run.

Broadcast, CTV, social, trade show, or your homepage. Once we know the destination and the job it has to do, we can scope it properly and give you a real number instead of a range.
